Hampden is not off the table as the Home Nations ramp up their bid to host the World Cup in 2030. The SFA chief executive insists Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland are still in a strong position to land the tournament, despite the crowd chaos at Wembley before the Euros final between the English and Italy.
Maxwell is convinced FIFA will look at the bigger picture and is confident the Home Nations and the Irish can launch a successful bid - and one that would have the knock-on effect of improving Hampden.
He said: “It’s an exciting prospect because there will be opportunities to look at stadium development, finance and what we could leverage off bringing a World Cup to Scotland.
