Government coronavirus funding 'doesn't touch the sides' - and it could have a big impact in Greater Manchester

Council bosses in Tameside have warned that government funding for coronavirus costs doesn’t ‘touch the sides’, with the town hall predicted to face a £48m shortfall next year.

Cabinet member for finance and economic growth, Coun Oliver Ryan said that without more support, they could be ‘clapping people on a Thursday and then looking at whether their job is sustainable on a Monday’.

A meeting of the strategic commissioning board was told that to date the council has received £13.9m in COVID-19 support funding from central government.
