Steven George Gerrard MBE (born 30 May 1980) is an English professional football manager and former player who manages Scottish Premiership club Rangers.
He spent the majority of his playing career as a central midfielder for Liverpool, with most of that time spent as club captain, as well as captaining the England national team. Widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time,
Gerrard was awarded the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award in 2005, and the Ballon d'Or Bronze Award. In 2009, Zinedine Zidane and Pelé said that they considered Gerrard to be the best footballer in the world.
Gary Neville has revealed that whilst on England duty he approached Steven Gerrard about signing for Manchester United, but his proposal was met with a swift rebuttal from the Liverpool legend.
United dominated the England set-up around the early 2000s with the likes of Neville, Rio Ferdinand, David Beckham and Paul Scholes perennially in the squad.
However, there was an abundance of talent from other Premier League clubs, and Neville revealed that he would use international breaks as an opportunity to talk to a number of England stars about a switch to United.
One such player was Gerrard, who dismissed the notion out of hand due to intense rivalry between the Red Devils and Liverpool.
