Furlough fears dominate helpline as Scots struggle with finance and benefits

Anxious employees have swamped an advice service worried about the UK Government’s emergency coronavirus job retention scheme.

The most common calls to Advice Direct Scotland were about “furlough”, including from people unable to access the programme.

Furlough was set up by Chancellor Rishi Sunak to give employers 80 per cent of their wage bill, leaving bosses to top up the rest while staff are unable to work during lockdown.

But the scheme is still largely untested. One major loophole is causing distress for people who switched jobs just before the cut-off date at the end of February.In the first week of this month, 30 per cent of queries related to the emergency scheme.
