In scorching 27C heat, motorists have been pictured getting out of their cars to sit on the side of the road, some looking for alternative ways to kill the time.

The gridlock comes after a lorry crashed into a bridge between Junctions 17 and 18 at around 8am this morning. Traffic was made worse after a car broke down between Junctions 16 and 17 and one lane had to be shut.
