Dream of saving landmark Salford 'estate' pub has been destroyed - by storms

Storms have ended a ten-year fight to save a landmark Salford pub. The Woolpack, was built in the 1970s to serve residents in the new estate that surrounded it, dominated by tower blocks.

The flat-roofed boozer on Belvedere Road, off the A6, at Pendleton, became the heart and soul of the community along with a cluster of other pubs nearby.

But in 2008 it closed and was put on the market for £175,000. A year later a campaign was launched to save it, backed by Bez from Happy Mondays.

But damage caused by the recent Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis and the cost of moving asbestos from it have dashed hopes for good of it ever re-opening.
