Council commits to supporting educational events on black history

Join thousands of others who have signed up for the Daily Record newsletter.Renfrewshire councillors have agreed to get behind future cultural and educational events focusing on black history following the tragic killing of African-American George Floyd.At the first-ever virtual full council meeting this week, elected members voted to recognise Black History Month every year in October and consult with the region's black community on how the local authority could best support events outside that month.The idea was put forward in a motion from Paisley Northeast and Ralston councillor, Jim Sharkey, as members engaged in a debate on how best to reflect on the area's past links with the slave trade following the rise of the Black Lives Matter.
