Godzilla vs. Kong continued to score the best opening numbers of the pandemic at the North American box office, grossing another $11.6 million on Friday for a three-day total of $27.9 million.

That puts the Legendary and Warner Bros. tentpole on track to post a five-day debut of $42 million by the end of Easter weekend in a needed boost for the ravaged theatrical business.

That's by far the biggest showing since the COVID-19 crisis commenced. Godzilla vs. Kong is playing in 3,064 theaters, a pandemic-era high.

Still, the North American box office continues to face major challenges in attempting to recover. More than 93 percent of the U.S.
