Larger celebrations may well have been cancelled but families are planning to mark VE Day with parties and picnics in their own homes this Friday.
May Day bank holiday has been moved to the Friday this year in honour of the special day so that the country can commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of fighting in Europe during the Second World War.
Back in 1945, Britain and its Allies celebrated the defeat of the Nazi regime. Wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill declared May 8 a public holiday and Victory in Europe (VE) Day was met with parties, dancing and singing in the streets.
