Typical household energy bills to be capped at £2,500

Energy bills for a typical household will be capped at £2,500 a year, the new Prime Minister has confirmed.Liz Truss has this afternoon set out a raft of measures she says will help people and businesses with the soaring cost of energy.She said a typical household bill for gas and electricity will be capped at £2,500, a reduction of around £1,000 on the projected hike expected next month.The cap will remain in place for two years.Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.Ofgem announced last week that a new price cap, to come into force in October, would see the typical household energy bill rise from the current £1,971 per year to £3,549.The previously promised energy bill support scheme which offers every household £400 off their bill this winter will remain in place.Vulnerable families will, the Prime Minister says, receive additional support.But the new projected price still represents a doubling of energy prices when compared to the same time last year.The Prime Minister said her new price guarantee would “provide certainty” to home owners and businesses.All businesses, charities and public sector organisations will also be offered an “equivalent price guarantee” for six months, with the business secretary to conduct a review in order assess which sectors need longer term support.Download the FREE Renfrewshire Live app now for all the latest news, features and sport in your area.
