Boris Johnson’s government has produced its first Budget since the election, aimed at proving ministers are serious about closing regional divides.
New Chancellor Rishi Sunak revealed an extra £175bn in infrastructure spending would be released over the coming Parliament, more than had been promised in the election, alongside moves to ‘change the whole mindset of government’ regarding spending outside London.
Immediately-announced giveaways include a share for Greater Manchester of a £4bn long-term public transport fund - similar to previous money Andy Burnham has used for new trams and cycle lanes.
So far it is not known how much the region will get, but it local leaders are likely to focus at least some of any resulting money on the next
