Sophie and Harry are the most popular royal baby names amongst the wider public over the past quarter of a century, new research has revealed.
Whilst Charlotte and James have also remained consistent favourites down the years the data reveals. Ahead of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, nursery retailer Kiddies Kingdom have analysed the names given to royal family members from the Queen's grandfather King George V onwards.They have then used figures from the Office of National Statistics to determine how many newborns have been given those names from 1996 to the last full year's recorded data in 2020, with an average ranking over the 25 year period putting them in order of popularity.
Topping the list of girls' names is Sophie, the name of Prince Edward's wife, officially known as the Countess of Wessex. With an average ranking being the eighth most popular girls' name over the last quarter of the century, it has remained a firm favourite.
Although its popularity has waned slightly in recent years, slipping to the 26th most popular girls' name in 2020. Charlotte, the name given to Prince William and Kate Middleton's second child in 2015, has also been consistently popular.
