A taxi driver killed a pensioner after turning on to a main road while looking the wrong way. Jean Mpwaba was watching oncoming traffic and failed to see Fred Whitworth as he was crossing Market Street in Farnworth .

The impact of the smash sent the 84-year-old flying into the road and left him with 'unsurvivable' head injuries. He died in hospital the following day.

At Bolton Crown Court on Monday, Mpwaba was handed a community sentence after a judge heard the 'hard-working family man' had shown 'considerable remorse' over what had happened.

The court heard how Mr Whitworth had been to the Betfred shop in Market Street before crossing the road at about 2pm on September 5 of last year.
