Former Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce reckons Steven Gerrard will only leave Ibrox for a top Premier League job. The Rangers manager was heavily linked as a contender for the Newcastle job vacated by Steve Bruce last month, but Eddie Howe looks set to take the mantle.

A £305million takeover of the Premier League club was completed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund in October to usher in football's richest owners.

Gerrard has earned hero status at Rangers after winning his first Premiership title last season and ending Celtic's 10-in-a-row bid.

He has also achieved success in Europe, including progression to the Europa League's last 16. Newcastle are in the Premier League's relegation zone and face a fight to stay in the division.
