The film and stage director, who won a Tony for his helming of The Ferryman in 2019, has outlined his vision for a rescue package to prop up the country’s venues that have been hit hard by the coronavirus lockdown.Writing in the Financial Times, Mendes called the current situation the “biggest challenge to Britain’s cultural life since the outbreak of the Second World War”.“The country’s theatres and actors, musicians and music venues, dancers and dance spaces, concert halls and opera houses are all under threat.
