The Scottish Police Federation (SPF) have claimed masks given to officers give 'no meaningful protection' against coronavirus.
Police Scotland announced yesterday they would be issuing officers with surgical face masks to wear when appropriate throughout the pandemic.
SPF welcome efforts made to secure and deliver FFP3 masks, however they can't endorse the use of surgical masks as personal protection equipment (PPE) because there is little evidence they offer protection against Covid-19.
David Hamilton, chairman of the Scottish Police Federation, said: “The demand for PPE amongst our members is understandably high and whilst we note the service is now able to issue type two surgical masks, these will not provide any meaningful protection
