A road in Radcliffe has been shut after a huge sink hole emerged in its surface. The gaping hole emerged on a stretch of Outwood Road over the weekend, say residents.

Radcliffe councillor Mike Smith said he had reported a 'dip in the road', near to the junction with Belmont Road, last week.

But after it started opening up, police arrived on the street on Monday to close it off. Coun Smith said: "The hole is about seven or eight metres deep and the groundwork is being washed away. "It looks very dramatic. "There is obviously an issue with water getting under the road and washing the base layer away because the road was only resurfaced last year." Engineers from United Utilities visited the site on Tuesday morning to investigate.
