Jason Reitman to Direct Film About First ‘Saturday Night Live’ Broadcast for Sony

J. Kim Murphy Jason Reitman has set another feature at Sony Pictures, with the studio ordering a film based on the first broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” in October 1975. Reitman and his “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” co-writer Gil Kenan penned the original screenplay for the project, drawing from the pair’s series of interviews with living cast, writers and crew members from the original production. The untitled “SNL” feature continues Reitman and Kenan’s partnership with Sony Pictures, where they are currently in production on a sequel to “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” due to release in theaters this December. Kenan is directing the follow-up to Reitman’s 2021 entry of the sci-fi comedy series. The two collaborators signed an overall producing deal with Sony after the release of “Afterlife,” which grossed $204 million at the global box office against a $75 million production budget.

‘Saturday Night Live’ announces three-hour 50th anniversary special

Saturday Night Live has announced it will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year with a three-hour primetime special on NBC.The tribute will air live on February 16, 2025 – which is a Sunday – and will be part of a “celebratory weekend” for the show.No further details about the show have been shared, although earlier this year, creator Lorne Michaels did indicate plans for such a special.“We’re doing the 50th anniversary show in February of ’25, so I will definitely be there for that, and definitely be there until that, and sometime before that we’ll figure out what we’re gonna do,” he said.NBC ran a similar tribute for the show’s 40th birthday in 2015, featuring appearances from countless alumni from SNL history, including Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Billy Crystal, Will Ferrell, Norm MacDonald and Tina Fey.A feature film about the show’s premiere episode on October 11, 1975 is also in the works. ‘Ghostbusters’ Sequel Confirmed To Return Franchise To New York City – Sony CinemaCon Presentation

Producer Jason Reitman appeared via video sans footage with the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel cast of McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon in what was the first look of the movie. Reitman confirmed that the new sequel, due out on December 20, returns the franchise back to New York City where the first movie took place.

After “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” resurrected the franchise in November 2021, Sony Pictures and director Jason Reitman promptly started developing a sequel. Reitman isn’t directing the untitled sequel anymore (writer Gil Kenan is), but it’s still on track for a Christmas 2023 theatrical release.
