But the climb to the top came with its own set of obstacles. During her acceptance speech for TLC’s Legacy Award on Tuesday, Chilli got emotional as she recalled some of the group’s hardest moments, and celebrated their biggest triumphs as women of color in the music industry. “When you are a woman of color, it’s real hard — it’s a huge struggle,” she told the audience of tastemakers and breakers at Variety‘s Power of Women luncheon. “I’ll always remember when ‘No Scrubs’ came out and it was actually our first number one…I always wanted to be on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine…we didn’t get the cover. I won’t say who [got the cover], it’s okay because he deserved it too but we also did. The message was ‘the last time we had someone black on the cover it didn’t really sell well.'”

“We were the best-selling girl group in America of all time,” T-Boz says in the trailer, adding “no matter what we went through, we never questioned the love.”The 2-hour documentary also features interviews with Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and rapper Missy Elliot, among others.After a long hiatus following Lopes’ death, T-Boz and Chilli reunited in 2014 and in addition to their 2017 album “TLC” they have continued touring regularly. “When you believe in yourself, that’s powerful,” T-Boz says in the trailer.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Lifetime and A+E Networks released the first trailer for “TLC Forever,” a two-hour documentary detailing the rise and enduring legacy of the girl group. In the trailer, remaining members Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas — Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes died after a car accident in 2002 — reflect on their meteoric rise to become the bestselling girl group in America at the time. Having sold over 85 million records worldwide, the group soared to success, scored nine top 10 hits and winning over 35 major awards including the video of the year Award for “Waterfalls.” But amid the success came in-group fighting and obstacles that included external attacks, bankruptcy and illness. “How are we meant to fight against the world if we’re fighting internally?” the duo asks in the trailer.

Larry Barron, a veteran unscripted producer and executive, passed away suddenly on December 24. He was believed to be 55.
