A family-run garage that once inspired mile-long queues due to its cheap fuel has been forced to close. Bailey Garage in Abergavenny, Wales, has been sold due to the cost of living crisis.

The business served the local community for over 50 years before closing its doors for the final time last week. The garage hit national headlines last month for being one of the first in Britain to drastically reduce fuel prices to 20p cheaper than the national average, Wales Online reported.

Owner Ian Bailey said his wife, who has been involved with the family business for 37 years, “hasn’t stopped crying” since news of the sale was confirmed.

The 53-year-old - who inherited the garage from his dad - has addressed accusations online that he cut the price of fuel before selling up.“I also feel really sad and as though a family member has died to be honest with you,” Ian said from the garage before it was officially sold on Wednesday. “Ascona Retail approached us 18 months ago to buy it, and we’ve not known since whether it was actually going to happen or not.
