A huge cheer went up as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry arrived at St Paul’s Cathedral for this morning’s thanksgiving service for the Platinum Jubilee.The Duke and Duchess of Sussex held hands and were smiling broadly as they walked up the steps of the cathedral, while cheers could be heard from the crowd.Kate Middleton and Prince William and other senior royals are at the service with Meghan and Prince Harry - in a first joint event since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from royal duties two years ago.However, the Queen will not be in attendance after pulling out having experienced "some discomfort" during Thursday's celebrations.Prince Andrew will also be absent after palace officials said he tested positive for Covid-19.While Harry and Meghan were welcomed with a loud reception, Prime Minister Boris Johnson was booed as he arrived at the service.Meghan and Harry arrived hand in hand to the service, stopping to chat to the senior cleric before taking their seats among other royals including Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.It comes as the Queen had the chance to meet her great-grandaughter Lilibet for the first time following yesterday's Trooping the Colour.Her Majesty, 96, is said to have had a private lunch with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry at Windsor yesterday.Royal commentator Omid Scobie, one of the authors of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's biography Finding Freedom, said that yesterday evening would have been the first time the monarch could have met her namesake, who turns one on June 4, in person.The Dean of St Paul’s has said today’s thanksgiving service represents the nation “picking up the baton” from The Queen as a thank you for her years of service.
