People who are struggling to combine work with 'lockdown' childcare should ask their employer if they can be put on furlough, the Treasury has said.
The comments come as the government's Job Retention Scheme - or furlough - went live today. Under the scheme, employers can go online to claim cash grants worth up to 80 per cent of wages, capped at £2,500 a month per worker during the lockdown.
A report published today urges the Chancellor to also consider extending the 80 per cent wage replacement to employees who reduce their working hours to accommodate childcare.
Some parents could be forced to spend virtually the entire day balancing work commitments and childcare responsibilities during the Covid-19 lockdown, experts have warned.
