Gary Lineker has been forced to delete a tweet about the Lionesses winning the Euro 2022 final after social media backlash. After the England team secured their 2-1 score, the former England footballer turned TV presenter shared a Twitter post with the caption: "The @Lionesses have only gone and done it, and Kelly is England's heroine, bra none." The now-deleted tweet was subject to heavy criticism from fans, as the star came under fire for his poor choice of words which reportedly came across as "casual sexism” that women in sports often face.

Gary explained that he deleted his tweet as many people had "missed the context" and said he does "rubbish like that constantly" on the social media site and that it was "just a play on words given the celebration" One disappointed user replied: "You are in a highly influential position & could genuinely help change attitudes.

I'm aware of the context but 'bants' like these have the effect of belittling women's achievements & putting us 'in our place'...Sexism is far from over, words matter, & can be damaging." Another quipped: "A lame play on words that anyone with half a brain could see was disrespectful at best .

Compounded by saying it was a joke and he's not responsible for nor will condemn the stream of men's sexist comments that it began.
