France will shut down all 'non-essential' public places from midnight tonight in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced new measures during a press conference tonight as the number of cases in France rose sharply from 3,661 to 4,499.

The number of deaths stands at 79. President Macron announced the closure of all schools on Thursday evening as part of a package of 'exceptional' measures.

Now Mr Philippe has announced that the lockdown will extend to restaurants, cafes, cinemas and discos, as well as non-essential businesses.
