The US Food and Drug Administration has granted approval for the medicine made by American pharmaceutical firm Biogen. That's despite warnings from some experts that results of trials failed to prove it could slow progress of the disease.

The drug, Aducanumab, is given as an infusion every four weeks. It is the only drug that can likely treat the underlying disease, rather than manage symptoms like anxiety and insomnia according to regulators Stateside.
