Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will not be getting a theatrical release in Saudi Arabia. Deadline confirmed the news on Friday (April 22). Click inside to find out why… The outlet writes that while the film hasn’t technically been banned, it didn’t receive a distribution certificate.
The announcement comes after Marvel’s The Eternals was also dropped from a theatrical release in Saudi Arabia, with the film being banned for its depiction of same gender romance and the inclusion of the MCU’s first gay superhero.
Deadline notes that Doctor Strange features an appearance from America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), who is gay in the Marvel comics.
Doctor Strange 2 was slated for a day-and-date theatrical debut on May 5 as part of its global rollout. The film is still expected to be released in United Arab Emirates, while Kuwait and Qatar’s releases are still up in the air.
