Covid-19 lockdown sees number of Scots claiming benefits double in a year

Get the stories that matter to you sent straight to your inbox with our personalised newsletter.THE number of Scots claiming benefits has more than doubled over the past year as the economy continues to feel the impact of the coronavirus lockdown.The latest figures show the number of people working in Scotland fell by 15,000 from April to June.Official figures out today show there were 222,000 claimants as of June - an increase of 9100 over the month and a rise of 112,500 over the year.For the period April to June 2020, Scotland’s employment rate estimate fell over the quarter to 74.3 per cent and the unemployment rate estimate rose over the quarter to 4.5 per cent.Across the UK, employment fell by the largest amount in over a decade.
