A frightened cat believed to have been trapped inside a lock gate on a canal for a week was rescued unhurt by the RSPCA and firefighters.

Now the hunt is on to reunite him with his owner. The mischievous moggy, who wasn’t microchipped, ended up stuck behind a heavy wooden panel - and was only spotted by a dog walker who saw his gleaming eyes in the darkness.

The drama played out on a stretch of towpath along the Rochdale Canal in Manchester city centre, at Lock 89 off Whitworth Street West.

The cat was just above water level and the RSPCA said the area was full of litter and hazardous waste like uncapped needles.
