BYKER Grove creator and Coronation Street writer Adele Rose has died aged 87. The writer was the ITV soap's longest serving writer - having written almost 460 episodes between 1961 and 1998 - as well as the only female writer in the show's early years.

Adele also created Byker Grove, which helped propel presenting legends Ant and Dec into stardom. The writer's husband Peter Chadwick confirmed to Chronicle Live she died of pneumonia on December 28.

Adele and Peter were together for 40 years and married 10 years ago. She leaves behind her son, Steve, and grandson, Daniel.

Her daughter Carrie died several years ago after contracting sepsis. Peter told the paper: "She never really recovered and went downhill.
