A huge 'Tree of Trees' sculpture has been erected outside Buckingham Palace to mark the Queen’s historic Platinum Jubilee. The celebratory feature, made up of 350 British trees in aluminium pots, will be lit up on the first full day of celebrations on Thursday, 2 June.
British designer Thomas Heatherwick said it was ”an honour” to make the 70ft sculpture, which reflects the planting of more than a million Jubilee trees as part of the Queen's Green Canopy (QGC) initiative.
The Queen has herself planted more than 1,500 trees across the world during her 70 year reign. Lighting beacons is a traditional part of royal events, usually part of royal visits, and the Tree of Trees will signal a string of beacon lightings around the UK and the Commonwealth.
Thousands more are already lined up to illuminate on the first evening of the long Platinum Jubilee weekend. Heatherwick's huge structure, made up of small trees in pots “sprouting” from timber-plank branches, will form a centrepiece of celebrations at the palace, which includes a live pop concert in front of 10,000 people. The Tree of Trees towers over the palace and the individual pots will be gifted to community groups and organisations at the start of the next planting season in October.
