The BBC are set to create a "woke" new soap to reflect modern Britain and rival EastEnders. A day before BBC Three's return from online-only to regular television channels - with a line up of big stars including Gemma Collinswho celebrates turning 41 today - the network's controller Fiona Campbell has revealed her ambition for the new show.
In the hopes of "showcasing" a particular location in "all its glory", Fiona plans for the soap to be set away from the bustle of London and to only recruit cast and writers from social media. "What would it look like?
It could be somewhere very specific in modern Britain — Derry or Belfast, Aberdeen or Newcastle," she said. Fiona added: "I want to showcase a locality in all its glory.
I'd like to provide a platform for the cast of the future." "You can see how many stars came out of early EastEnders." She also expressed hopes for the soap to reflect BBC's focus on "how tough it is to be in your teens and early 20s today".The ambitious new soap comes from Fiona believing that young people, who noticebaly favour streaming services, are still seeking "shared experience" television.
