Nick McAllister has told how going out on loan proved the perfect tonic to kickstart his Ayr United career. The defender's Somerset stint looked to be going nowhere when he was farmed out to Clyde in January. But the 21-year-old, back in the Lee Bullen fold this summer, shone with a man of the match display in United's Championship opener on Saturday. And he's revealed how spending time at Broadwood focused his mind for the comeback bid as an Honest Man.Speaking ahead of Ayr's trip to Queen's Park tomorrow night, McAllister said: "Being at the age I am, I need to be playing regular competitive football."That was my whole aim when I first signed here."It just wasn't happening for me at the time so I spoke to the gaffer and going out on loan was a mutual thing that helped me."Coming in to this pre-season, I think that helped me.

I wasn't coming in sluggish because I had that game time behind me so I think it really benefited me."I've put in a lot of work over pre-season and before then, so it was nice to see it paying off on Saturday but it's just one game."I need to keep my head down and keep working now."McAllister remained a big part of the Ayr setup despite being out on loan from January onwards and is a vocal presence within the United dressing room.He said: "I'm not one for downing tools or throwing in the towel - it's not in my character."There was no bad blood around me going out on loan and I was training here every day I could so I was never going to come in with my head tripping me."That wouldn't have done me or the boys around me any good."It's a competitive nature we have in the dressing room, you know someone is ready to come in and take the jersey off you.The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now.Get
