The country’s two biggest political parties commemorated the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOTB) on Sunday, offering their support to the LGBTIQ+ community. The 17 May event is marked annually around the world to commemorate the day the World Health Organization decided to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1990.
It has become a major platform to highlight violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTIQ and other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender, identities, expressions, and sex characteristic.
Awareness around the event is growing in South Africa every year, with NGOs, political parties and some corporates acknowledging its significance.
