The end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s time at Manchester United was always going to be a difficult period, as David Moyes arrived to begin a new era.
The first transfer of that next phase at Old Trafford would herald a new dawn, and it proved to be emblematic of how the club fared in the early post-Ferguson days.
Unfortunately for both Moyes and one of his first arrivals, a hotly tipped Uruguayan prospect named Guillermo Varela, it was not an entirely positive sign of things to come. Arrival Varela was signed after impressing both with his home club, Penarol, and in the South American youth championships after being spotted towards the end of Sir Alex's time at the club.
