Warning issued over coronavirus scammers duping public into giving bank information

East Ayrshire Council is warning residents to be on their guard for coronavirus scammers. The local authority has been made aware of some people being asked for personal details during phone calls to check on how they are doing.Council staff are making regular calls to people who are shielding or vulnerable – but insist their call handlers will not ask for any personal details like bank information or national insurance numbers.A spokesperson said: “During the current lockdown and isolation arrangements, we have been alerted to an increase in the variety of scams, including many related to coronavirus.“Please stay vigilant and remind those you know and work with not to give over such details during phone calls.” Further advice can be found.
