Get the stories that interest you straight to your inbox every day with our personalised newsletterRare bottles of port – giving a nod to Ayr’s rich wine history and heritage – have gone on sale.The 1970 vintage was the last to be bottled by Whighams of Ayr, predecessors to the current Corney & Barrow shop in Academy Street.Historic cellars beneath the shop date back to 1766 and founders Alexander Oliphant & Co made their name trading some of the finest wines.Drink arrived by ship in huge wooden barrels, often accompanied by corkwood from Lisbon, and the wine was then bottled and sealed before being sold to noble houses across Scotland.Whigham, Fergusson, Cunningham & Co.
