The Real Rachel from 'Inventing Anna' Has Filed a Lawsuit Against Netflix - Here's Why

Rachel DeLoache Williams, the real-life person who was the inspiration for Katie Lowes‘ character in the Netflix series Inventing Anna, has filed a lawsuit against the streaming service. Rachel previously called out Netflix for helping Anna Sorokin profit from her con after it was reported that she was paid $320,000 for her story, though she only was able to keep a portion of the money.

Now, Rachel is suing Netflix. Click inside to find out why… The Hollywood Reporter reports that Rachel has filed a defamation lawsuit, arguing that nearly everything about the “Rachel” character is made up.

The lawsuit, filed in Delaware state court, says, “This action will show that Netflix made a deliberate decision for dramatic purposes to show Williams doing or saying things in the Series which portray her as a greedy, snobbish, disloyal, dishonest, cowardly, manipulative and opportunistic person.” Rachel‘s lawsuit claims that the show makes it seem as if she ended her friendship with Anna because of her financial difficulties.

The complaint states, “Williams did not stop being friends with Sorokin because Sorokin was having problems in Morocco, but rather because she subsequently discovered on her return to New York that Sorokin was a liar and a con artist whose statements and promises had induced Williams to incur liabilities of around $62,000 on Sorokin’s behalf were false, and who only reimbursed her $5,000 despite numerous promises to reimburse her $70,000 to account for the full debt and any late fees incurred.” Rachel‘s lawyer pointed out an interview that executive producer Shonda Rhimes gave to show that the character was “intentionally misrepresented to tell a better story,” according to THR.
