Light snow is forecast for a small number of places across the country, after days of unsettled weather and heavy rain for many.The torrential downpours that have battered Britain are set to stop today.

And with the temperature tipped to plummet, paving way for the possibility of light flurries of sleet and snow.While it's unlikely to be blizzards and thick snowfall, many could well be waking up to frosty conditions and wintry showers this December 25.

Alex Burkill, a meteorologist at the Met Office, told the PA news agency: " Christmas Eve night into Christmas Day is going to be very cold, with harsh widespread frost.
