Elizabeth II
Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born 21 April 1926) is Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms. Elizabeth was born in London, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and she was educated privately at home. Her father ascended the throne on the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII in 1936, from which time she was the heir presumptive. She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In 1947, she married Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, with whom she has four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

Rochdale is set to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee in style with street parties being held across the borough. A late surge of applications from patriotic residents has landed in the council’s in-tray - and that’s on top of those already set to go ahead over the four-day weekend.

The festivities, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne, will take place from Thursday June 2 through to Sunday, June 5.

Details have been released of where the street parties confirmed so far will take place - although council chiefs stress it is not the final list.

There will be 18 roads closed for parties - eight in Middleton, six in Rochdale and two in both Littleborough and Heywood. It’s not just at street parties where the jubilee celebrations go with a swing, however.With less than two weeks to go until celebrations erupt across the country, Rochdale has plenty of events lined up to mark the milestone anniversary.
