The closest-ever images ever taken of the sun, which show solar flares dubbed 'campfires' on its surface, have been published.The mesmerising images were captured by the UK-built Solar Orbiter spacecraft.Solar Orbiter was built in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, by Airbus and backed by the UK Space Agency and launched in February 2020.It will continue to provide images of the sun from inside the orbit of Mercury - its nearest planet.These images come from its first close pass of the Sun in mid-June and early operations of the instruments.Recorded at a distance of just over 77 million km, they have revealed omnipresent miniature solar flares, dubbed 'campfires', near the surface of the sun.The close pass, known as a perihelion, puts the probe.
