Theaters were closed for months starting in March to help stop the spread of the virus.

Now that Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” has hit (some) theaters and seemingly underwhelmed some audiences and critics, the next big anticipated sci-fi epic of the year is easily Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune.” Based on Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novels of the same name, David Lynch made a “Dune” movie in 1984, but it’s one of his famous flops, and suffice to say it didn’t come near the franchise potential Hollywood always hoped it would have.

Cinemas in California's Orange County were granted permission Tuesday to reopen, becoming the closest market near Los Angeles to once again allow moviegoing in the COVID19 era. The order was issued by Clayton Chau, the health officer for the county.

It’s been a while since we’ve done a serious box office report. Obviously, that’s because the film industry put the kibosh on releasing major films in theaters until recently, with last week’s debut of “The New Mutants” and this past weekend’s arrival of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet.” And though we finally have box office numbers for “Tenet,” things are so very different than they were when the feature was scheduled to be released in July that it’s hard to even pinpoint exactly what the numbers mean.
