A record-high number of LGBTQI characters were seen in regular and recurring roles on US TV in 2021-2022, a new report from GLAAD has revealed.GLAAD’s Where We Are on TV report analysed primetime scripted series regulars and recurring characters on broadcast networks, cable networks and streaming services for the 2021-2022 TV season.“The growing state of LGBTQ representation on television is a signal that Hollywood is truly starting to recognize the power of telling LGBTQ stories that audiences around the world connect with,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement. GLAAD said that while there were series with multiple LGBTQI characters like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, All American, Legends of Tomorrow, Station 19, Grey’s Anatomy, Batwoman and Sex Education, there was no primetime broadcast series with majority LGBTQI characters.Stills from Pose (left) & Sex Education (right).GLAAD recorded 637 LGBTQ characters on these platforms. Small Axe anthology on the BBC have been revealed.Mangrove, the first of five original films, will premiere on BBC One and iPlayer on November 15. Lovers Rock follows on November 22, Education on November 29, Alex Wheatle on December 6, and Red, White and Blue on December 13.The films are set between the ’60s and mid-’80s, with each story centred on the experiences of London’s West Indian community “whose lives have been shaped by their own force of will, despite rampant racism and discrimination”.Never in my wildest dreams would I’ve thought my life story would get to the attention of film director Steve McQueen, starred by John Boyega & part of the @bbctvcentre Small Axe series.

Mangrove premiere. The film, which is part of Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology for the BBC, opened the festival with screenings at the BFI Southbank, as part of the festival’s 12-day hybrid physical and online program.Mangrove tells the true story of the Mangrove 9, the group of Black activists who clashed with London police during a protest march in 1970 and their highly publicized trial that followed.

This is five days before it debuts on Amazon Prime in the U.S.Originally developed for the BBC in 2014, Small Axe comprises five films that tell different stories from within London’s West Indian community between the 1960s and 1980s.Mangrove will be the first episode in the series, marking 50 years since London’s Mangrove protest, when Black people demonstrated against police harassment.

Even without yet having seen all five of the original films in Steve McQueen's riveting Small Axe anthology for Amazon and BBC, which surveys two decades of West Indian experience in London, it seems appropriate that the series concludes with a story of Black resistance embodied in the determination of one idealistic man. After celebrating the nourishing force of community in Lovers Rock and the power of collective protest in Mangrove, McQueen intensifies the focus in Red, White and Blue on individual action.
