Originally a Sony movie, eventually sold to HBO Max in the COVID-19 pandemic, at first— in its Eastern-European-set prologue and first act, especially— it’s hard to imagine the quaint, peculiar, small stakes ‘American Pickle’ as a theatrical release, and anything more than the TV movie that it is now.

It’s unclear what the long term effects will be seen from the current COVID-19 pandemic in relation to the film industry. We’ve seen studios basically write off 2020 and focus on making sure productions can begin again (safely) and that 2021 doesn’t turn into a bust.
