first trailer for Illumination and Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has arrived and, well, it looks pretty much exactly like you’d expect an animated movie based on the beloved video game franchise would look. (Unlike, say, the aggressively surreal 1993 live-action movie.) But people were just as interested in what Mario would sound like, since Mario is being voiced by Chris Pratt, who has gone to great lengths to suggest that the voice he has come up with was “unlike anything” in the games and very, very cool.

As it turns out, not so much! And while we don’t hear much from him in the trailer (which is very much a teaser), it was enough to make Twitter absolutely lose its mind.Gizmodo editor James Whitbrook said that the voice was just Pratt’s normal speaking voice “with a slightly racist accent,” while Vulture film critic Allison Wilmore put up a screen shot from “The Sopranos” (you’ll have to look for yourself; it’s too perfect).

Even Billy Eichner got in on the fun, taking a break from his laborious outrage over his movie bombing. See those responses (and more) below.“The Super Mario Bros.

Movie,” which also features Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Keegan Michael Key, Charlie Day, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, hits theaters on April 7, 2023.
