Ralf Rangnick's comments after Manchester United lost at Crystal Palace pointed towards the German staying at Old Trafford for his consultancy role.
United announced on Sunday that Rangnick would be leaving the club before starting his consultancy role. The 63-year-old will take charge of the Austria national team on a full-time basis.
In a statement, the club said: "We would like to thank Ralf Rangnick for his efforts as interim manager over the past six months.
By mutual agreement, Ralf will now focus solely on his new role as manager of the Austria national team and will not therefore be taking up a consultancy role at Old Trafford."
