‘Queen never liked celebrating and faced birthdays with reluctance’, says expert

Forming a huge part of the country’s history, Great Britain has had a king or queen for more than a thousand years. And with the Queen being our 61st monarch, Her Majesty’s role is full of weird and wonderful traditions from times gone by.

In fact, one of the most notable traditions that has stuck around is that the Queen, who is set to turn 96 later this week, celebrates her birthday twice a year.

While Her Majesty celebrates the actual date of her birth on April 21, the monarch also celebrates an official birthday on the second Saturday in June every year.
