Prince William and Kate Middleton are showing their support for the Caribbean community in the U.K.
The pair visited the ELEVATE initiative at Brixton House on Wednesday (June 22) in London, England. During his address, the Duke of Cambridge, 40, said that he and Kate, also 40, have been interrogating the way the “past weighs heavily on the present” following their recent trip to the Caribbean. Click inside to find out what he said in his speech… “My family have been proud to celebrate this for decades — whether that be through support from my father on Windrush Day, or more recently during my grandmother’s Platinum Jubilee, as people from all communities and backgrounds came together to acknowledge all that has changed over the past seventy years and look to the future,” William said, per People.
Windrush Day was named for the Empire Windrush, a ship that transported hundreds of Caribbean immigrants to the U.K. in 1948 after World War II created a labor shortage.
Dubbed the Windrush generation, thousands of men, women and children built their lives in the U.K. as a result. Windrush Day was recognized by the government in 2018. “Only a matter of years ago, tens of thousands of that generation were profoundly wronged by the Windrush Scandal.
