Greater Manchester Police chiefs are 'really worried' they will miss genuine emergencies after a huge surge in people dialling 999.
The force is being stretched to the limit after receiving almost 1,000 more 999 calls on Friday compared with the same day last year - a total of 2,459 versus 1,590.Police described the current demand on their call centre as 'immense' and said it has only been possible to keep answering calls due to staff working extra shifts.In a tweet published on Saturday afternoon, GMP pleaded with the public to only dial 999 'in a real emergency' and use online resources as much as possible.The statement did not elaborate on why the force is experiencing such high volumes of calls.However, earlier this week GMP said they.
