Staring at the blank window of the pregnancy test I felt a familiar sinking feeling. “Not pregnant,” I said sadly to my husband Paul as we huddled on the edge of the bath together. “Don’t worry,” he said in a soothing voice. “We’ll keep trying.” We were used to disappointment, but it didn’t hurt any less.

It was difficult to see family and friends have babies. And Christmas was the worst – I wanted so much to share the festive season with little ones of our own.

For years, I’d concentrated on my career as a retail manager, working all over the UK. Paul and I had grown up together on the same street, but only started dating in 2007 when I was 22 and he was 24.
