Scholes says that the playmaker was all set for a transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2003 - replacing David Beckham, who had just moved to Real Madrid.
But the switch collapsed - and Ronaldinho opted for Barcelona instead, who paid £25m for him. In his five years there, he won two La Liga titles as well as the Champions League. "We were as a close as announcing him and giving him a number but I think he ended up changing his mind at the last minute and signed for Barcelona," Scholes told the BBC. "We were all excited - Ronaldinho, what a player!
